Glenwood The oldest part of Glenwood is a one-story log cabin with a garret (which has a small bedroom, closet & 1/2 bath), half-dovetailed log wing & is covered in board & batten siding & at one gabled end is a stone chimney. In the one-room interior a boxed winder stair rises in a corner, leading to the garrett. On the wing's back porch is an unusual treatment of the fascia boards above the posts; they are joined at the corners with cabinetmaker's dovetail notches. Only cut nails have been observed suggesting the wing dates to the early 1800s. Early dwellers often used small log houses where they could live while building a larger home, then incorporating the cabin into the house. It has a fireplace (1 of 5) & would make a great den or office. The front addition, now the main part of the house, is a two-story frame house with a hipped roof. It is believed to have been built circa 1850. The relatively plain exterior belies the sophistication of the interior. The central hallway dwelling features brick chimneys on each end & an Italianate cornice with heavy brackets that span the eaves of the roof. A small front portico has been replaced by a modern porch with classical columns, & the original double door entrance is flanked by diamond-shaped panes in the transom & sidelight surrounds, the first hint of the handsome Gothic Revival style influence expressed inside. Here you find the foyer, formal living room, dining room, 1/2 bath & 2 bedrooms & bath upstairs. Each room has a working fireplace. The first-floor rooms feature twelve-foot ceilings, original six-over-six pane, double-hung windows with wide convex moldings, & tall paneled doors with coordinating moldings. The stair in the foyer features lancet cutouts between the tops of the rectangular balusters. Two mantels have Gothic peaked frieze profiles, but otherwise the mantels in the house are Greek Revival.
